Description
Although it was born on the historic Muscadet soils, this cuvée is marketed as Vin de France, where the Loire already feels the influence of the Atlantic and the light reflects on stony soils, Domaine de l'Ecu Granite is part of the historic identity of Domaine de l'Ecu, built on the truth of the terroir. Organic since 1975 and biodynamic since 1998, when few were still talking about it, the winery has chosen to listen to the land rather than intervene in it. The decision to isolate and bottle their plot on granite was almost a manifesto: to let the rock speak without make-up.
Domaine de l'Ecu Granite comes from 3 hectares facing Southwest, with 45 to 55 year old vines planted on stony soils and granite subsoil of two micas. Moderate yields (35 hl/ha) and meticulous green work concentrate the energy of the Melon de Bourgogne, the region's historic variety. Here, far from any trivial lightness, the grapes express themselves with tension, depth and a marked saline imprint. The cool Atlantic climate preserves a vibrant acidity that defines its architecture.
Winemaking
At Domaine de l'Ecu Granite, the grapes are harvested 100% by hand. The grapes enter by gravity, without pumping, respecting the integrity of the fruit. Pneumatic pressing is gentle and there is no racking, allowing the must to retain its fine lees. Fermentation is carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts. Ageing on the lees takes place in underground concrete tanks, where the wine evolves slowly, with natural micro-oxygenation and without the influence of wood. Everything is aimed at preserving the mineral purity of the granite.
Taste
In the glass, Domaine de l'Ecu Granite is a brilliant white gold. The nose is precise and restrained: gunflint, wet flint, sea breeze. The citrus fruits appear taut and sharp, lemon zest and fresh lime, without exuberance. On the palate the entry is straight, crystalline. The acidity is firm, vibrant, marking a stylised line that runs along the palate. The ageing on the lees adds a subtle volume that balances the verticality, but the minerality dominates. The finish is long, iodised and saline, with a persistence that evokes shells and wet rock. Domaine de l'Ecu Granite is an Atlantic wine, pure and uncompromising, with a cellaring capacity of a decade or more.
