Description
In the Roussillon, where the Mediterranean does not ask for permission and the tramontane sweeps the sky, Hervé Bizeul decided that greatness did not have to sound like new oak. Clos des Fées Les Sorcières Rouge was born from this courageous idea: a red wine with a terroir identity and immediate pleasure, without make-up. It is said that, when everyone was asking for more wood and more extraction, he preferred to walk the plots at dawn and adjust the harvest to the millimetre: "if the vineyard doesn't speak, the winery only disguises". With this stubbornness, he blended grapes from several villages to create a Roussillon wine that is fresher and more vertical than its reputation suggests. The blend is Mediterranean and precise: Syrah (50%) as a spicy backbone, Garnacha Tinta (40%) for fruit pulse and breadth, and Cariñena (10%) providing shade, salinity and nerve. The base is high altitude clay-limestone soils in Vingrau, Tautavel and Opoul (200-350 m), with a touch of black schist in Cases de Pène: stone, wind and light, a combination that sharpens the wine without taking away the sun.
Winemaking
At Clos des Fées Les Sorcières Rouge, the grapes are harvested by hand, sorted in the vineyard and carefully transported. Pre-fermentative maceration is carried out at low temperature to fix clean fruit and aromatic detail. Extraction is handled gently, aiming for texture without harshness. Malolactic fermentation is complete and racking is carried out in the air to round without sweetening. Ageing continues in stainless steel on fine lees for 8 months, refining the feel and preserving purity;minimum SO₂ in ageing and bottling.
Taste
In the glass, Clos des Fées Les Sorcières Rouge shows a deep, violet colour. Nose of cherry and raspberry with fresh blackberry, black pepper and garrigue (thyme, rosemary), like Mediterranean undergrowth after a breeze. The palate is medium-bodied, juicy and surprisingly agile: it enters round, with a slightly minty freshness that stretches it out. Silky tannins support a clean finish with spices, an echo of hot stone and a subtle salinity. A red that is easy to drink, but leaves its mark: sunshine with edge, fruit with discipline.
