Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Aromas of sweet blackberries, raspberries, cedar and spices introduce the 2023 d'Armailhac, a medium- to full-bodied, fleshy and supple wine with an enveloping core of fruit, sweet structuring tannins and a gently oak-inflected finish. It's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot—which, as readers may remember, is a rather high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for this address.

Description
Château d'Armailhac was born out of a Bordeaux vision that has never sought to choose between heritage and precision. In Pauillac, this historic estate, linked to the Rothschild family since 1933, has always championed a faithful interpretation of the terroir, with vines planted on deep gravel, clay and sand that compel the vines to seek depth, tension and character. Here, the aim is not to pursue easy opulence, but rather to create a Pauillac wine with vigour, structure and a very classic elegance. The blend, based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot, perfectly illustrates this duality between power and finesse. The estate’s commitment to a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc is particularly bold – something uncommon in the Médoc and decisive in shaping the wine’s personality.
Winemaking
At Château d’Armailhac, the grapes are harvested by hand and each plot is brought into the cellar separately to preserve its identity. Following a two-stage selection process – first by hand and then optically – the grapes are destemmed and flow by gravity into truncated-cone tanks and vats of varying sizes, allowing for extremely precise winemaking. Each batch is vinified individually with controlled extractions, pumping-over and maceration times tailored to the character of each plot. The blend is finalised in November, seeking balance and depth. The wine is then agedfor around18 months in French oak barrels, using a combination of new and second-use barrels, before undergoing traditional fining and bottling.
Taste
In the glass, Château d’Armailhac displays that seductive classicism that makes Bordeaux great: first come cassis, blackberry and black plum, followed immediately by cedar, graphite, fine tobacco and a hint of dark spices. Nothing feels overdone. On the palate, it opens with juicy black fruit, but quickly narrows, refines and takes on a mineral character, with firm, polished tannins and a freshness that lengthens the finish. There is tension, there is depth, and also that hint of sharpened pencil so characteristic of Pauillac. The finish offers liquorice, delicate herbs and a serious, long and aristocratic aftertaste. A red wine with authority, energy and ageing potential.
