Description

In the Ribeira Sacra, where the rivers Sil and Miño draw impossible canyons between centuries-old terraces, the Castro Candaz project is born out of absolute respect for the land and Galician tradition. It is the alliance between Raúl Pérez, a living legend of Spanish wine, and Rodrigo Méndez, the natural heir of the Atlantic vineyard. Together they decided to look to the past, but with their feet in the present: to recover old vineyards, minimally intervened, and to vinify with the sensitivity of those who listen rather than impose. "La Vertical" is the result of a firm commitment to the purest and most direct expression of Godello in a unique context: slate soils and Atlantic orientation, on the steep slopes of the Quiroga-Bibei sub-area, one of the most extreme and vertical of the Ribeira Sacra.

Here, the Godello finds a different interpretation: not as polished or domesticated as in other regions, but more wild, mineral and raw. The steep slopes and the extreme manual work mark the character of a wine that is born of difficulty, but expresses itself with precision. Only a few plots on black slate soils and a continental climate tempered by Atlantic breezes give life to this label. Production is extremely limited and deeply linked to the fierce orography of the area.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand and selected berry by berry. Once in the winery, the 100% Godello grapes destined for Castro Candaz La Vertical are gently pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in 500-litre oak barrels, where the wine remains for a year. The ageing on the lees adds volume and smoothness without losing freshness. The wine is not clarified or filtered, and is bottled with minimal doses of sulphur, respecting the natural expression of the vintage and the soil as much as possible.

Taste

Castro Candaz La Vertical shows an elegant and deep aromatic intensity in the glass: pollen, yellow flowers and fresh herbs intertwine with notes of ripe white fruit and a background of damp slate. It is not a fruity or obvious white wine; it is subtle, insinuating, with that austerity so characteristic of Godello when grown at Altura and on schist.

In the mouth, Castro Candaz La Vertical has an enveloping and textured profile, with a perfectly integrated acidity that gives it tension without aggressiveness. Silky, balanced and long, it displays layers of raw almond, dried citrus, a slight grapefruit peel bitterness and lingering minerality. The wine grows with air, gaining in nuances and volume, showing its gastronomic vocation and cellaring capacity.

An honest and sophisticated expression of mountain Godello, Castro Candaz La Vertical shuns artifice to show itself in its pure state: deep, vertical and full of character.
