Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2022 Coma d'en Pou was produced with the grapes from a vineyard planted with different types of Garnacha on limestone soils. It's perfumed and floral with a spicy twist and mealy hints of cereal, notes of pollen and red berries. It fermented in open-top barrels and stainless steel with a small portion of full clusters and matured in 500- and 600-liter oak barrels and some glass demijohns for 13 months. It has ripeness and some creaminess and is round and lush, with 14.5% alcohol, reflecting the year, some dusty tannins and a touch of rusticity. 4,511 bottles and 180 magnums produced. It was bottled in February 2024.

Features

Description

Bàrbara Forés Coma d'En Pou is a wine that originates from the Comes d'En Pou area, located to the east of the town of Gandesa, in the foothills of the Sierra de Cavalls. This area has about 10 hectares, distributed among vineyards, olive groves and forests. The soil has a loamy texture, with a high proportion of active limestone and the presence of eroded conglomerates, offering optimal conditions for vine growing.

Elaboration

The grape varieties used in this wine are different types of Garnacha: red, hairy and red. These are planted together, following the ancient tradition, and are harvested and vinified together, known as Field Blend. The grapes are harvested by hand between 20 and 27 September. The wine is fermented in open barrels and stainless steel tanks with its own yeasts, macerating with the skins for 17 days. Afterwards, the wine is aged in barrels for 12 months.

Taste

Bàrbara Forés Coma d'En Pou stands out for its garnet red colour. On the nose, it has a medium-high intensity, with aromas of vanilla, balsamic and rosemary. On the palate, it is a full-bodied wine, with a perfect integration of its components. The flavours of old wood and undergrowth spices combine harmoniously, providing a rich and complex taste experience. The acidity and tannins are medium-high intensity and well integrated, contributing to its balance and persistence on the palate.
