Its history
The winery as such was founded in 1985, thanks to the efforts of Leandro Vasquéz, a businessman of Cuban origin who settled in the area of Páganos, in Laguardia. But it was not until 1995 that the La Rioja Alta S.A. group decided to buy the winery and the 45 hectares of land of the San Martín estate, as well as the chapel and the mansion house.
In 2005, in order to improve the quality of the wines, the team in charge of the winery carried out an exhaustive study to determine the best soils for certain ageing processes. This effort was effectively consolidated in 2016, with the incorporation of facilities to optimise the selection and destemming process.
Today, in addition to producing high quality wines, the Torre de Oña winery offers a wine tourism service that includes guided tours, tastings of its best wines, restaurant and accommodation. A unique experience!
Vineyard and location
The vineyard is located at an altitude of 630 metres above sea level, in the towns of Páganos and Laguardia, belonging to the D. O. Ca. La Rioja. This area is characterised by its calcareous and clayey soils, ideal for the development of round, full-bodied tannins.
As an additional curiosity, the vineyards are protected by the Sierra de Cantabria, a mountainous formation that crosses the provinces of Burgos, La Rioja, Álava and Navarra, so the Vitis vinífera plantations are also protected from the winds coming from the north.
Discover the oenologist behind this winery
Since 2018, Alejandro López has been the winemaker in charge of the Torre de Oña winery. This native of Vitoria holds a degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Navarra and a degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of La Rioja. At the beginning of his career he worked directly with the Government of La Rioja and later on, he complemented his professional training in different countries, such as the United States, Italy or Chile.
In 2019, López will join the team led by winemaker Julio Sáenz as human talent. In addition, in 2018 Decanter magazine selected him as one of the 10 revelation winemakers in Spain. This is thanks to his experience and knowledge, as well as his dedication.
More than wines, passion for the vineyard
The most important characteristic of Bodegas Torre de Oña is the care that is present in every part of the process. Its main objective is to offer high quality wines to consumers, which, in addition to following careful winemaking parameters, are faithful to the tradition of the great red wines of La Rioja.
Undoubtedly, an experience worth being part of. What are you waiting for to give it a try?
