Buy Wine from López de Heredia Viña Tondonia
The Bodega López de Heredia Viña Tondonia winery dates back to 1877, when Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta began to plan and build what is now the winery.
Viña Tondonia is a historic winery, the first in Haro and the third in La Rioja. The quality of its wines is a faithful testimony to its 137 years of history.
Its history...
The López de Heredia Viña Tondonia winery is the result of the concerns of a time when French winemakers arrived in La Rioja to solve the problems with the phylloxera insect that was attacking the vineyards.
From there, Don Rafael, who was neither an oenologist nor a viticulturist, but a good student of these professionals, followed in their footsteps and began to build what is today the winery.
Location of the López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Winery
The winery is located in the mythical city of Haro, capital of La Rioja Alta, one of the most prestigious and privileged areas for vine growing in Spain and, in fact, one of the top three wineries in La Rioja.
Winery Facilities
The labyrinths of the winery have been built with carved stone that sits on top of rock in the formation of underground caverns and naves. This structure is impressive for its solidity and grandeur and has been recognised as the "Cathedral of Wine".
Don Rafael decided to drill in order to obtain sufficient underground space to place the barrels in which the ageing of his wines would begin. The borehole is 200 metres long and more than 10 metres deep, in the heart of a colossal block of sandstone, with endless rows of Bordeaux barrels stored in its bowels.
There are also 72 oak vats of the most diverse origins such as Cantabrian, Bosnian, Allier, North American, built with different capacities.
For this winery, oak wood plays an important role, as both the fermentation and ageing of its wines are carried out in these containers using completely natural and artisan procedures.
Vineyards
Even in his time, Don Rafael López de Heredia knew that you could not make good wine without having your own vineyard. For this reason, between 1913 and 1914, he built "Viña Tondonia", a beautiful vineyard of more than 100 hectares, located on the right bank of the river Ebro, where the most typical Riojan grape varieties are grown.
In Viña Tondonia, there are many types of soil, from alluvial (near the river bank), to calcareous clay, (with a lot of gravel and pebbles).
In these characteristic soils, the typical Rioja grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo and the white Viura and Malvasía are grown.
In addition to this vineyard, there are three other vineyards in the upper part of La Rioja which benefit from its microclimate of pure Atlantic influence. These vineyards are called Viña Cubillo, Viña Bosconia and Viña Zaconia.
Selection and love....
The López de Heredia Viña Tondonia winery has been following, through four generations, two words that characterise them: selection and love.
In addition, it is a single-family winery that continues with the philosophy and the labour and social maxims implemented by Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta more than 132 years ago.
And you, have you already tried some of the wines from this winery? Come on, we invite you to taste them!
