Galmés i Ribot is a winery belonging to the Ribot Galmés family, which for more than three generations has been dedicated to the cultivation of grapevines, but it was not until 1997 that it decided to dedicate itself exclusively to the production of high quality white, red, rosé and crianza wines.
It is a winery of more than 14 hectares, dedicated to the elaboration of high quality wines, product of the processing of different grape varieties, resulting in a diverse catalogue of unique wines.
Let's talk about its history
Galmés i Ribot is a winery located in the lands called Rotes dels Cavallers, owned by the Ribot-Galmé family. The history of this terroir begins in the 20th century, when the wineries of Santa Margalida, traditionally renowned for their dedication to wine production, were located in this area.
After that time, specifically in the 17th century, Ramon Safortesa Fuster, the Comte Mal, took possession of them, to lease them to the new knights, and they were also used for planting vines and producing wine.
In 1997, the Ribot-Galmé family took over these lands and decided to convert them completely to produce high quality white and red wines. Cati Ribot, also known as "The Sparkling Lady", leads the natural movement in wine production in Mallorca. Cati is in charge of leading the third generation of producers at the family bodega Galmés i Ribot in Santa Margalida.
He was the one who insisted on changing the philosophy of the bodega, which had previously been dedicated to producing specimens on a large scale, without seeking the naturalness of the same.
The first of this bodega's wines was launched in 2019, which was named "Ve D'Avior", meaning "wine from the past".
Techniques used
The wines of the Gaimés i Ribot winery are made from various grape varieties, such as Prensall Blanco, Giró Blanc, Moscatel, Chardonnay, Callet, Fogoneu, gorgollassa, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah, in addition to the so-called experimental grape varieties, such as Escursac, Argamussa, Valent Blanco, Valent Negro, Jaumillo and Mandó.
It is a winery that uses the indigenous varieties produced on the island, as a way of rescuing the tradition of the local winegrowers, making sure that the grapes follow the new philosophy of the winery, as they are made with natural techniques.
From the cultivation of the fruit to the processing of the must, it is guaranteed that the grapes are treated under organic practices, with minimum intervention and without the addition of sulphites. The aim is to allow the grapes to express themselves naturally and not to alter the final flavour of the wine.
The maceration and fermentation phase will depend on the type of wine, as will the ageing process. They are then lightly filtered before bottling.
Vineyards
The wines of the Bodega Galmés i Ribot come from 14 hectares of vineyards located in Santa Margalida. These are lands treated using organic techniques, where no chemical products are included in the cultivation process or in the vinification phase, as well as taking care of the ecosystem where they are grown.
Wines from the past
Cati Ribot is a pioneer in the production of natural Mallorcan wines, the same ones that currently make up this winery's catalogue. They are also known as wines from the past, as their rudimentary production techniques prevail over the technology that is invading the market of this precious beverage.
