Buy Wine from Fazenda Prádio
Fazenda Prádio is located in the Ribeira Sacra region of Galicia, Spain, specifically in the Chantada subzone, one of the coldest and most Atlantic-influenced areas of the region. The winery was founded by Xabi Soeanes, a passionate lover of the Galician countryside and its almost forgotten history. He grew up in A Peroxa, a small village about 20 kilometres from Ourense. Xabi dreamed of sharing the cultural treasure of his land through his wines.
Vineyards
Fazenda Prádio 's vineyards cover 3.5 hectares and are situated on terraces overlooking the gorge of the Miño river, between 180 and 300 metres above sea level. The terrain is a combination of granite and slate, with shallow, low-fertility soils, ideal for viticulture. The Ribeira Sacra region has a climate that is a constant struggle between oceanic and continental influences, resulting in highly variable climatic conditions.
Xabi grows a variety of indigenous grapes, including Mencía, Caíño Longo, Merenzao, Brancellao, Godello and others. Although he initially practiced organic and biodynamic viticulture, Xabi had to adapt after several difficult seasons that almost led him to ruin. Today, he maintains an organic approach but with the flexibility to use other methods when necessary to ensure the survival of his vineyards.
Philosophy
Fazenda Prádio 's philosophy focuses on making wines that reflect the rich history and terroir of Ribeira Sacra. Xabi strongly believes in the regional tradition of blending grape varieties to create more complex and balanced wines. This practice means that when one variety suffers due to climatic conditions, others can thrive, ensuring the quality of the final wine.
In the winery, winemaking techniques are natural and minimally interventionist. Fermentations are spontaneous and take place in granite vats. After alcoholic fermentation, the wines are transferred by gravity to French oak barrels of different sizes, where they undergo malolactic fermentation naturally. Xabi uses techniques such as batonnage to soften the tannins and stabilise the wines, and all wines are bottled with minimal filtration and low sulphur levels.
Xabi has tried different farming methods to find the most sustainable and natural way to work his vineyards, always adapting to the changing and extreme conditions of Galicia. His honest and practical approach allows him to produce wines that are not only true to their terroir, but also sustainable from a broader ecological perspective.
In short, Fazenda Prádio represents a harmonious combination of tradition and innovation, where each wine tells a story rich in culture and passion for Galician viticulture. Xabi's dedication to his land and his commitment to authenticity and quality are reflected in every bottle, offering wine lovers a true jewel of Ribeira Sacra.
