Buy Wine from Château Lafite Rothschild
The origins of Château Lafite Rothschild are dated back to the 14th century, when Lafite was a medieval property founded by Abbot Gombaud de Lafite. In the Gascon dialect “Lafite” means hill, because the manor and its vineyards are settled at the top of Pauillac commune. A conversation about Château Lafite Rothschild would last for hours, and it hides a beautiful story that we will try to explain briefly in the following lines. Even though some documents mention the existence of a vineyard at Château Lafite Rothschild, it won't be until the 17th century, with Ségur family managing the estate, when the 74 hectares will be planted with the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot vineyards that currently make up the property. Thanks to the Ségur family saga, Lafite Rothschild is tradition, history and one of the best and most appreciated wines in the world. We also know that founder's Jacques Ségur heir was married to Château Latour, heiress, thus joining both lands and starting a common wine history. Marquis Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur was able to conquer London city with his wines in 1700, and succeeded in having his Lafite Rothschild ordered by Prime Minister Robert Walpole. At the same time, Ségur production also prevailed at the courts of Paris and Versailles thanks to a medical prescription that a doctor gave to Cardinal Richelieu, recommending Lafite Rothschild wine as the best and most pleasant tonic. After drinking it, Richelieu commented its rejuvenating effects to King Louis XV! In 1784, Ségur family went bankrupt and had to sell the estate to Nicolas Pierre Pichard. From that moment on, this domaine will be managed by several owners until 1868, year when Baron James de Rothschild and his three sons purchased it. The following years are the Golden Age of Lafite Rothschild: they received the mention in the official classification of 1855 as the first winery categorized Premier Crú Classé and Rothschild is being considered as one of the best five wines in the world. At the beginning of 1900 Lafite Rothschild enters a dark era for two obvious reasons: the phylloxera and powdery mildew pest that destroyed the land, and the Second War World, with the German army expropriating the land of Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild. At the end of 1945, Rothschild family regained the control of Château Lafite Rothschild and Baron Élie undertook the reconstruction of the domaine, reinforcing its name in international markets such as United States and raising the wine prices. The arrival of Baron Élie's nephew, Èric de Rothschild, brings a series of changes such as renovating the facilities, changing the technical team and replanting the vines. Additionally the company broadens its horizons during the following years with the purchase of new wineries: Château Duhart-Milon in Pauillac, Château Rieussec in Sauternes, Château L'Évangile in Pomerol, Château Paradis Casseuil in Entre Deux Mers and Château Peyre-Lebade en Haut-Médoc.
With 104 hectares of vineyard on a calcareous subsoil of tertiary origin with stones and sand mixed in the surface, two wines are produced under the name of Château Lafite Rothschild: Château Lafite Rothschild, annual production 240.000 bottles, is one of the most refined and elegant Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world ranking, complex and full of balance! And Carruades de Lafite is a selection of the youngest vines from the plots placed at the back of the château, facing west. It is the second wine of the property, with a higher proportion of Merlot, full of flowers, jasmine, blackberries and bitter cocoa nuances.
