Buy Wine from César Márquez
Bodega César Márquez is a personal project of this winemaker who was born and raised in a family dedicated to viticulture, the Pérez de Valtuille de Abajo. Between 2007 and 2011, he studied oenology at the Requena School of Viticulture.
Then, he started working at the Castro Ventosa winery and with his uncle he created La Vizcaína. Although he still works in the family winery which was founded in 1752, since 2015 he has been making approximately 7 types of wines.
He does this in his own winery, which bears his name and is located in a building in Valtuille de Abajo, which dates back to the 19th century, which was also a winery and which he himself restored.
A family tradition
At first, his family sold wines in bulk to other larger wineries, but it was in 1989 when they created the Castro Ventosa brand, whose name derives from a pre-Roman archaeological site found in the area, and it was at that time that they began to bottle their own wine.
César's uncle is the famous oenologist Raúl Pérez, who has twice been recognised as the best oenologist in the world, and who is known as the Wizard of Mencía. It is from his uncle that he has learned much of what he knows. In fact, it is with him that he works on all his blends. It was after 7 years of apprenticeship with his uncle that he decided to create his own winery.
César Márquez gives life to his own winery
It was his uncle who gave him the impetus he needed to become independent and give life to his own project. It was clear to César Márquez that he was more interested in consolidating a small winery where quality wines would be produced, rather than a winery that would only produce wines by volume.
César owns less than one hectare of vineyards, which is spread over several plots that are part of the family inheritance, as well as in the municipality of San Juan de Paluezas.
Back to tradition
This young oenologist makes a great effort to ensure that the wines reflect their exact origin, and in this sense, he carries out artisanal work that allows him to return to his roots, trying to leave aside modern and interventionist methods, respecting the terroir as much as possible.
In his plots you can find whitish and calcareous soils, rare in Bierzo, and some slatey and clayey soils. Most of the vineyards are old, many of them are between 80 and more than a hundred years old. These are co-planted with grapes of different varieties and his main objective is that his wines reflect the different identities of each plot he has planted in Bierzo.
The crops are treated in an organic and environmentally friendly way, without the use of pesticides or any other harmful chemical product that could disturb the natural balance of the terroir. Moreover, the plots are treated independently, according to the particular characteristics of each plot and its needs.
The wines are made with the minimum intervention
The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats with stems and long macerations. Moreover, the vinifications are natural, without temperature control or filtration.
For white wines, the grapes are destemmed by hand and fermented spontaneously in French oak barrels without batonnage. For the red wines, certain percentages of whole bunches are fermented in open vats. On the other hand, some of the cuvees are macerated for up to two months.
The wines of Bodega César Márquez are usually very balanced and express well the terroir of Valtuille, they are also elegant and easy to drink. They are quite genuine wines that demonstrate his wisdom and experience in the area.
The wines he has made include one wine from the region, one from the village and from several of his plots. César's work focuses mainly on microvinifications of Godello and Mencía grapes from old vines.
César Márquez's achievements
The work of winemaker César Márquez is recognised worldwide, and some experts rank him as one of the top ten winemakers in Spain. In 2018, his wines were rated above 95 Parker points.
The César Márquez winery produces around 30,000 bottles a year. Currently 80% of its wines are exported to the United States, Canada, England and Germany. It also intends to expand to other countries such as Denmark, Sweden and Singapore, and later to Portugal, Japan, Brazil and Uruguay.
