Gerardo Méndez belongs to the third generation dedicated to this family winery located in Meaño, in the heart of Val do Salnés.
Bodegas Gerardo Méndez started to be a business in 1973, but there are documents of vineyards as early as 1850.
The winery
The winery facilities are located in an old stone house that is also the family home and is surrounded by centenary Albariño vineyards.
This winery has innovative equipment and facilities, although its wines are mainly known for being non-interventionist and for adapting to the peculiarities of each vineyard and each vintage.
Its family estate overlooks the Arousa sea and the mouth of the Pontevedra estuary. In the heart of the Salnés region, at the foot of Armenteira and its monastery, this winegrower's house is both home and winery.
Méndez works from his home, in his cellar-laboratory. He is the founder of the Rías Baixas designation of origin, and the name of this winegrower is linked to the Albariño grape.
Varieties and wines
At the Gerardo Méndez winery, only wines made exclusively from the Albariño grape variety are produced. His wines are the result of the peculiarities of each of his vineyards and of the winemaking methods used in the winery.
Both Gerardo and his son have become renowned winegrowers and winemakers in the Rías Baixas due to the outstanding quality and personality of their wines, which are recognised in Spain and in more than 15 countries around the world.
Vineyards
The vineyards are managed in a conventional way, taking the utmost care of the vines to avoid treatments whenever possible. All the work is carried out according to the characteristics of each plot and each vine.
Gerardo works with indigenous yeast. The vineyards are his great passion and he controls all the processes of his vineyards, his grapes, the harvest and vinification.
Next to the Casa Grande is an extraordinary 1 hectare vineyard with Albariño vines over 200 years old, on shallow, granitic soils. Amazing!
Currently, the winery works with 10 hectares of vineyards, 7 are owned and 3 are rented. All of them are distributed in 150 plots, which is characteristic of the area of Galicia where smallholdings predominate.
The grapes are also purchased from local winegrowers, who have been working with the winery for more than 25 years.
These vineyards occupy the highest part of the appellation, which is important in a place where most of the vines are at sea level, and it is there that the Do Ferreiro are born, magnificent albarinos with the face of Gerardo.
Tradition
Tradition and popular culture have been passed down through three generations of winegrowers, of which Gerardo is the latest representative.
He is a man of this time who continues with his legacy in a respectful way and who is committed to the most demanding palate of those passionate about good wine and its quality parameters.
However, according to Gerardo Méndez, quality originates in the vineyards; in the care of the plant and the fruit in order to avoid aggressive treatments.
In the vineyard, the optimum degree of ripeness of the grapes must be monitored at the time of harvesting and the quality of the wine must be consolidated during winemaking, according to the characteristics observed each year.
It is necessary to make the most of the authenticity and character of the carefully selected Albariñovariety. Finally, the bottles are dominated by taste and personality.
A good wine is the result of the experience and knowledge of the winegrower who attentively and lovingly accompanies all the processes that are carried out.
And you, do you already know some of the magnificent albarinos from this winery currently represented by Gerardo Méndez Lázaro? Tell us what you think of them!
