Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The single-vineyard 2019 El Esquilón comes from a silty plot at 450 to 550 meters in altitude planted with old Listán Negro vines pruned in the braided cordón trenzado system traditional in la Orotava. It fermented with full clusters in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and had a maceration of 23 days. It matured in used 500-liter oak barrels for 14 months. It's 12.6% alcohol. This is from a higher altitude with sandier soils and has more complexity and depth, more nuance and elegance. It has something Nebbiolo-like that I loved. A volcanic Nebbiolo, that is! This could be the hidden gem of the winery, often overlooked because of the pricing. 4,100 bottles were produced. It was bottled in December 2020.

Description
Suertes del Marqués El Esquilón is an exclusive red wine, as its production is very limited due to the low yield of the vineyard. It is made with 70% Listan Negro grapes of 80 years old and 30% Tintilla grapes.
It is a very expressive wine classified by experts as elegant and with personality. When you taste it, you will be able to notice an ample balance and a long finish.
Winemaking
Suertes del Marqués El Esquilón is made by hand harvesting the grapes, which are stored in 16 kg boxes. The grapes are destemmed without being crushed and then subjected to a natural alcoholic fermentation process, deposited in open concrete vats at a controlled temperature, where manual punching down techniques are also applied.
The malolactic fermentation process is carried out in other types of barrels made from French oak, and thenaged for an extended period of 14 months. The bottling process is carried out without filtering the must.
Taste
This is a wine with high levels of concentration and volume that allow you to taste the touch of red fruits and some notes between cocoa and coffee. When in contact with the palate, its permanence is ample and elegant, also noticing a balanced acidity with fine and persistent tannins.
A wine with permanence and soft nuances of elegance.
Suertes del Marqués El Esquilón comes from the harvest of a fruit grown in low yielding soils, due to the presence of volcanic rock in the plot, however, the result is an intense, complex and long lasting wine. This makes it an excellent choice to accompany red meat dishes, goat cheeses, chicken and stews.
Suertes del Marqués El Esquilón is undoubtedly an expressive, elegant wine with a great balance in its flavour.
