Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Pape is an equal blend of Baga and Touriga Nacional this year and was aged for 30 months in fifth-use French oak. It comes in at 13.2% alcohol. The 'PA' stands for Castro's Outeiro vineyard, owned since 2002 when acquired from Passarela. The 'PE' stands for his Pellada vineyard, the famed and familiar property. The Baga comes from Pellada, while the Touriga Nacional is from the oldest block of Outeiro on granitic soil. When last seen, this was fine, but it has evolved well, combining freshness, flavor and complexity. This is well done and it should keep evolving. The earthy Baga has asserted itself for the moment. It may well age better than indicated.

Features

Description

The Quinta da Pellada Pape wine comes from the Portuguese lands, specifically from the Dão region. The grape variety that makes up this wine is a balanced combination of 50% Touriga Nacional from the Passarela-Outeiro vinha and 50% Baga from the Pellada vinha. These vines are between 20 and 60 years old, which gives a special maturity and character to the wine. They are planted on a granitic soil type with clay and sandy soils, at an altitude of 500 metres and with a density of 5,000 plants per hectare. These vines are pruned using the Guyot method.

Winemaking

Harvesting takes place in September, and after a meticulous selection both in the vineyard and in the winery, fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks with controlled temperature between 28º and 31ºC. Subsequently, the wine undergoes a 12-day resting process and is then aged for 14 months in Allier oak barrels.

Taste

Quinta da Pellada Pape has an intense ruby colour. On the nose, it is very concentrated, displaying a modern and vigorous aroma. On tasting, notes of compote and game can be appreciated, which are complemented by final toasted notes, leaving a pleasant memory on the palate. Its tannins are fine and of excellent quality, giving it great complexity and balance.
