Pardas Aspriu Xarel.lo 2018
£51.72 (Inc. VAT bot. 75 cl.) / North Ireland
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The nose of the 2018 Aspriu Xarel.lo is to die for. The wine is pale for its age, with an almost fluorescent yellow, and the nose is complex and nuanced, very different. It comes from a small plot (0.75 hectares) of very old vines, two terraces at different levels, so not every year do all the grapes make it into the wine. 2018 was a wet year, and the bunches from the lower part were used less; the ones from the two terraces have less soil and less yields. It has a moderate 11.75% alcohol with a pH of 3.1, a sharp and austere profile, with a developed nose, high pitched, with dried flowers, a medicinal touch and pollen, but there's more austerity in the mouthfeel, shy but with pungent, intense flavors in the finish. This fermented in used barrels, where it matured for six months. It was bottled in June 2019 and is aging at a slow pace. Only 504 bottles were produced, as it was already a low-yielding year because the plants suffered from the scarce rain in 2016 and 2017.
