The extremely young and undeveloped 2023 Vinha do Carril is only the second vintage bottled, because they skipped 2022. It's a single-vineyard wine from a 90-year-old plot they farm organically and biodynamically, from Quinta do Carril, again a cooler year, more in line with 2021. It fermented with full clusters in oak vats and aged in neutral 1,500-liter oak foudres for one year and four or five months in stainless steel before it was bottled. Yields in these old vines fluctuate a lot; it's a field blend with around 5% white grapes, where they look at the expression of the place, their most special vineyard in Douro. It has baby fat and still shows a little creamy and different from the typical black fruit from Douro, with red berries, herbs and flowers. It has a medium-bodied palate with contained ripeness, very fine tannins and a very tasty finish. This has clout and elegance. It should develop nicely in bottle. There were some 3,500 bottles. It was bottled in February 2025. I'd hold it for a bit to develop more nuance and complexity.
