Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Elegantly toasty, with a subtle note of gentian, the 2023 Le Carillon d'Angélus opens in the glass after aeration to reveal aromas of dark wild berries, cassis and flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, it is enveloping and juicy, offering good depth at the core and framed by velvety tannins, concluding with a fresh, fruit-driven finish.

Features

Description

Le Carillon d’Angélus was created in Saint Émilion Grand Cru as the estate’s own interpretation of the Château Angélus landscape, rather than a mere reflection of the estate’s great wine. The Boüard de Laforest family sought to create a red wine capable of expressing the terroir in a style that is more approachable in its youth, whilst remaining equally serious in its origins and winemaking. This ambition is evident in its connection to the land: plots tended with meticulous precision, a detailed analysis of each soil type, and a firm commitment to winemaking that preserves purity and texture. The blend combines Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from clay-limestone and clay-sandy-limestone soils, which are key to imparting freshness, depth and a distinctly Bordeaux-style elegance to the wine.

Winemaking

The production of Le Carillon d’Angélus is based on a meticulous selection of the grapes and a plot-by-plot vinification process designed to respect the character of each terroir. The reception of the harvest, gravity-fed transfer and precise work in the tanks allow for measured extraction, focusing more on finesse than on power. Ageing takes place for between 16 and 18 monthsinFrench oak barrels, with a controlled use of new oak (60%) so as not to mask the fruit. The aim is to achieve balance: a polished, refined wine that remains true to the identity of Bordeaux.

Taste

In the glass, Le Carillon d’Angélus reveals a deep nose of black plum, ripe cherry and delicate blackberry, nuanced by cocoa, cedar, sweet spices and a subtle hint of tobacco. On the palate, it is silky, with fine-grained tannins and a velvety texture that fills the mouth without feeling heavy. The Merlot brings juiciness and body; the Cabernets add structure to the wine with freshness, vigour and length. The finish is long, elegant and clean, leaving hints of black fruit, fine oak and delicate spice. A Saint Émilion red wine that combines immediate pleasure, class and ageing potential.
