Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2022 Lalama has a primary nose of bright berry fruit, leaves and a touch of honey and beeswax, with a sleek palate and a soft mouthfeel that makes it moreish and very easy to drink. In the warm 2022 vintage, it achieved higher ripeness, 13.6% alcohol, with a pH of 3.6 and five grams of acidity. It's round and has polished tannins. 77,750 bottles and 540 magnums produced. It was bottled in August 2024 after 17 months in oak containers of different sizes, but the oak is very integrated.

Features

Description

Lalama is a wine that stands out for its complexity and personality, made in the Ribeira Sacra, a region known for its high quality wines. This red wine is mainly composed of 85% Mencía, complemented with 15% Brancellao, Mouratón, Sousón and Garnacha Tintorera. These indigenous varieties bring to the wine all the freshness of the Bibei Valley, offering an Atlantic profile, fruity, mineral, herbaceous and with balsamic notes.

Winemaking

The elaboration of Lalama follows a careful process that begins with a manual harvest, selecting the grapes from vineyards located at altitudes between 300 and 700 metres. After the grapes have been chilled for 24 hours and hand-selected cluster by cluster, they undergo pre-fermentation maceration and alcoholic fermentation in truncated cone-shaped wooden tanks. The wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels of various uses, followed by resting in truncated cone-shaped oak tanks, which contributes to its balance and structure.

Taste

Lalama is a faithful representation of its terroir, with a magnificent balance between the fruitiness and freshness characteristic of Mencía and the strength of a classic red. On the palate, this wine explodes with a palette of flavours that includes fruit, spices, animal aromas, minerals, lactic notes and flowers, transporting us to the Ribeiras do Sil. Its good persistence and harmony make Lalama a unique sensory experience, recommended to be enjoyed after opening the bottle a couple of hours before drinking, allowing it to aerate properly and bring out all its nuances. Ideal with legumes, grilled and roasted red meats and small game, Lalama is undoubtedly a jewel of Ribeira Sacra viticulture.
