Description
From the slopes of Chavot-Courcourt, on the southern slopes of Épernay, comes Laherte Frères Les Vignes d'Autrefois, a cuvée that is both a wine and an act of memory. The plots that make it up were planted between 1947 and 1953, some with ungrafted vines, preserved generation after generation by the Laherte family. Aurélien Laherte, the current guardian of the legacy, decided to pay tribute to this viticultural heritage by making a pure Pinot Meunier Champagne, but far from the clichés of the variety. Here the Meunier is elevated, stylised, mineral and profound. The vineyard, cultivated according to organic principles, extends over clay soils, with flint veins and calcareous subsoils that provide tension, salinity and a clear expression of the terroir.
Winemaking
Laherte Frères Les Vignes d'Autrefois is harvested by hand at optimum ripeness. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak barrels, without malolactic fermentation, a key decision to maintain freshness and edge. The wine rests on its fine lees for 36 months, gaining texture without losing precision. After prolonged ageing, disgorging is done manually, with a very low dosage (2-4 g/l), allowing the wine to speak without make-up.
Taste
Laherte Frères Les Vignes d'Autrefois has a subtle and constant bubble. On the nose, it displays a complex palette: dried white flower, baked apple, quince, citrus zest and a whisper of toast. As it oxygenates, nuances of wet stone, raw almond and chalk appear. On the palate, the entry is electric, with vibrant acidity that cleanses the palate and a dry, almost chalky structure. The Meunier here does not seek roundness, but tension. The wine stretches, sharpens, with a long, saline, deeply mineral finish. More than a festive Champagne, it is a work of contemplation, demanding attention and rewarding with austere elegance. A liquid tribute to time, to the soil and to the living memory of old vineyards.
