Description

In 2014, Aurélien Laherte made a quiet but radical decision: to isolate a series of plots on the southern slopes of Épernay, where the chalk of the Campanian era is barely 20 cm below the thin soils. Thus was born Laherte Frères Les Grandes Crayères, a Blanc de Blancs that does not seek to impose itself, but to reveal. Pure Chardonnay, a massal selection of young and old vines, planted on west-facing slopes, cultivated according to organic principles. This cuvée is first and foremost a declaration of respect for the terroir: let the minerality set the pace, let the fruit be the vehicle, not the protagonist. In this part of southern Épernay, where the tradition of small winegrowers is stronger than the glitz of the big houses, Laherte Frères chooses the honesty of the soil rather than the opulence of style.

Winemaking

Laherte Frères Les Grandes Crayères is harvested by hand from grapes at the exact point of ripeness. Traditional pressing and alcoholic fermentation in oak barrels, without malolactic fermentation to preserve tension and freshness. The wine rests on its fine lees for a minimum of 36 months, developing texture and depth without losing edge. Disgorgement is manual, with a minimum dosage (3-4 g/L), which respects the raw energy of the terroir. Each step - from fermentation to bottling - is guided by a logic of precision: nothing more than necessary, nothing less than essential.

Taste

On the nose, Laherte Frères Les Grandes Crayères displays crisp aromas of fresh white fruit - green apple, crisp pear - intertwined with lemon, grapefruit and citrus peel. The minerality appears as a whisper of wet, saline, enveloping chalk. On the palate, the bubbles are fine, vibrant, almost aerial, supporting a sharp acidity that lengthens and stylises. The profile is slender but firm, with hints of faint brioche, green almond and subtle white flowers. The finish is dry, clean, deeply mineral, with chalky echoes lingering like a cool breeze on stone. A Champagne for those who seek truth before exuberance: the purest expression of southern Épernay, raw and elegant.
