Kuusu 2023

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red 2023 Kuusu was produced with Tempranillo or Tinta de Toro grapes from a 0.9-hectare plot of ungrafted ancient vines in the village of Villabuena del Puente on sandy soils with quartzite that deliver extremely low yields. The grapes were picked quite early to avoid excess ripeness and keep the freshness, were foot trodden and fermented with indigenous yeasts and some full clusters in stainless steel and matured in 600-liter barrels for 10 months. This is surprisingly floral and aromatic, elegant and fresh for the region. It has contained ripeness, only 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.5, with very fine tannins and a velvety mouthfeel. It's a very gentle and elegant Toro. 3,800 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2024.

Winemaking
Fermented with indigenous yeasts in foudres and French oak barrels. Aged for 12 months in 600-litre French oak barrels.
Description
Kuusu is a crianza red wine made with the Tinta de Toro and Albillo Mayor varieties by Oxer Bastegieta in the Castilla y León region under the Vino de España appellation.
The grapes come from a centenary vineyard planted in 1920 of 0.9 hectares located at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level on a soil with a background consisting of sand and a lot of quartz.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand selecting the best grapes from the centenary vineyard of the property. In the winery, alcoholic fermentation begins with indigenous yeasts in 1,000-litre French oak vats and in 500-litre open French oak barrels.
Malolactic fermentation and ageing takes place in French oak barrels where it ages for 12 months.
Taste
Kuusu is a powerful and very elegant red wine. With complex, concentrated, very fine, almost velvety tannins and a balanced acidity.
