From the Zellberg (silty soils) and Fronholz (argilo-calcaire), the unfiltered 2019 Les Pucelles Macération de Gewurztraminer Nature displays a very cloudy amber/orange color. The bouquet is deep, intense, fresh and elegant, with concentrated stone fruit, orange and potted ginger as well as floral and malty aromas, notes of dried dates and quince confiture and a hint of nougat. The wine is pure, elegant and vibrantly fresh on the palate, intense and long but by far not as rich and powerful as Gewürztraminers usually can be. This is one of the rare really convincing dry Gewürztraminers that doesn't give any hints of unripeness but mirrors the calcareous part of the soils as well as the winemaking, which includes 50% of macerated grapes during the fermentation. The result is a fascinatingly finessed and vital natural wine that is also a great gastronomic partner that was bottled without the addition of SO2. In fact, the 2019 Pucelles is stable enough and still tasted great from my uncovered glass the day after. 14% alcohol. Sourced chez Viniculture in Berlin. Tasted in May 2021.
