Description
Joseph Drouhin has always understood Burgundy as a silent dialogue between the land and those who work it. Since 1880, the family has cultivated this idea with a mixture of respect and courage, convinced that the wine must first tell the story of the place before that of the winemaker. In the south of Burgundy, in the hills of the Mâconnais, they found the perfect setting to express this philosophy in a brighter and more accessible style. That is where Joseph Drouhin Saint Véran was born , this white Chardonnay wine, where the grape becomes a direct translation of the landscape: clarity, tension and a mineral pulse that does not seek volume, but precision.
The vineyards rest on gentle slopes of chalky soils and light marl, a stony matrix that gives the sensation of chalk and wet stone so typical of Burgundy. The climate in the Mâconnais, slightly milder than in the Côte d'Or, allows the fruit to ripen more freely, but Drouhin maintains a meticulous and sustainable viticulture: contained yields, careful canopy work and harvests decided by balance, not by power. The idea behind this Saint Véran is clear: to show the most direct side of Burgundy Chardonnay without losing finesse.
Winemaking
After the harvest of Joseph Drouhin Saint Véran, the grapes are quickly brought into the cellar and gently pressed to preserve the aromatic purity. Fermentation is mainly carried out in stainless steel, with temperature control, aiming for a clean, straight and crisp profile, without any make-up. The aim is not to impress with oak, but to let the terroir speak.
Joseph Drouhin Saint Véran then rests on fine lees for several months (approx. 6-8 months), gaining texture and a light creaminess, without losing its tension. It is refined, delicately stabilised and bottled to capture that combination of freshness and balance that defines the style.
Taste
On the nose, Joseph Drouhin Saint-Véran first shows clear, luminous fruit: ripe pear, yellow apple and freshly grated lemon peel. With air, flashes of white flowers and a trace of fresh almond are added, always with a clean, cold, almost chalky sensation.
The palate enters smoothly, but quickly sharpens: fine, vibrant acidity that stretches the wine like an athlete. The texture is round, light creamy, and the signature of the place emerges in the middle: chalky minerality, a discreet salinity and a citrus persistence that cleanses the palate. The finish is long, elegant and very drinkable: a precise, gastronomic white wine from Burgundy, with that mineral calm that engages.
