Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is concentrated and very intense on the fruit-driven, deep and spicy nose. The wine is very elegant and refined on the dense and seriously structured, salivating palate that is a promise for the future and endlessly salty in the present. 8% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 08 24 in January 2025.

Description
The winery Joh. Jos. Prüm is internationally renowned for producing world-class wines, especially its iconic Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese. This vineyard is famous for being one of the best in the world, and its Riesling is a testament to its excellence.
Winemaking
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the most famous and prestigious vineyard in Joh. Jos. Prüm. It is characterised by its deep, weathered grey shale soil, an extreme slope of up to 70% and an optimal south-south-west orientation. This vineyard is named after a sundial that was erected in 1842 by Jodocus Prüm, an ancestor of JJ Prüm, to provide better time orientation for the workers. The combination of these geographical and climatic characteristics provides ideal conditions for the Riesling grape, resulting in wines with exceptional structure, ripe aromas and flavours reminiscent of stone fruits such as peach. In addition, these wines have a fine minerality and remarkable depth and length.
Taste
Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese is harmonious and almost perfectly balanced, with a lot of extract and a complexity that radiates strength, but remains agile. It is especially after a few years of maturation that the harmony, finesse and expression of these wines become unique. The wine combines power and density with an ethereal lightness, creating a distinctive complexity that derives from its beauty and delicacy. It is a wine that is destined to age beautifully, maintaining its vitality even at surprisingly low alcohol levels, generally between 7% and 9%.
