Description
Born into one of Burgundy’s most respected families, J.J. Confuron Coteaux de l’Auxois Chardonnay Clos de la Romanée does not seek to imitate the grand, opulent whites of the Côte d’Or, but rather to speak from a quieter, fresher and, perhaps for that very reason, more authentic landscape. The domaine’s history dates back to 1926, but its character was cemented by Sophie Confuron and Alain Meunier, who steered the estate towards organic viticulture and a philosophy of the utmost respect for the vineyard. This Chardonnay comes from Coteaux de l’Auxois, a western part of the Côte d’Or with a cooler climate and a marked limestone influence, where the clay-limestone soils and favourable exposures produce wines characterised by tension, verticality and serene finesse.
Winemaking
The winemaking philosophy follows this same logic of restraint and precision. With the J.J. Confuron Coteaux de l’Auxois Chardonnay Clos de la Romanée, every aspect of the process is geared towards preserving the purity of the fruit and the terroir’s character, rather than overloading the wine with artificial elements. The harvest focuses on maintaining freshness and balance; fermentation is carefully managed to preserve aromatic clarity; and the wine rests on its fine lees to gain texture and depth. This does not appear to be a white wine conceived through the exuberance of oak, but rather through clarity, energy and a mineral pulse.
Taste
On the nose, J.J. Confuron Coteaux de l’Auxois Chardonnay Clos de la Romanée is restrained at first, neither expansive nor strident. Gradually, notes of pear, yellow apple, lemon and grapefruit emerge, accompanied by a hint of white flowers, a faint suggestion of fine biscuit and a very subtle creamy note. Everything is perfectly balanced. On the palate, it is silky, almost polished, but the acidity immediately lends it a lively edge and stretches it out. This is not a broad or heavy Burgundy Chardonnay, but a wine with a taut structure, a juicy core and a chalky finish. The fruit is there, but it does not dominate; the freshness sets the pace and the minerality cleanses the finish. What remains is a precise, salty and balanced sensation, more of stone and energy than of volume, more of straightforward elegance than of opulence.
