Description
Jean-François Ginglinger, an unclassifiable figure from Alsace, inherited not only vineyards in Pfaffenheim, but also a certain irreverence. Since he converted the family estate to biodynamics, he seeks in each wine a direct expression of the soil, without masks, without ornamentation. The Ginglinger Muscat he makes - with Muscat Ottonel, Muscat d'Alsace Rose and Muscat d'Alsace (Petit Grains) vines - is his freest interpretation of the variety. The plot where these grapes are grown sits on limestone soils rich in marine fossils, a base that imprints minerality and precision. Here, manual work and absolute respect for biodiversity guide every decision. In a difficult vintage, Jean decided to vinify each variety separately, with no technology other than his intuition: a commitment to the truth of the vineyard.
Winemaking
The grapes that give life to Ginglinger Muscat are harvested by hand and gently pressed. Spontaneous fermentations, without temperature control, take place in old neutral wood vats, where the wine remains for about a year on fine lees. The wine is neither filtered nor clarified, and the use of sulphites is minimal or non-existent. Prolonged ageing adds structure and complexity, but does not detract from the varietal character.
Taste
Far from the lush, sweet Muscats, Ginglinger Muscat is dry, upright and mineral. On the nose, aromas of white flowers, lime zest, fresh grapes and a background of wet stone. There are also nuances of fresh grass and a hint of yeast suggesting its natural fermentation. The palate is electric, with precise acidity that runs across the palate like a chalk line. The finish is long, saline, with notes of white grapefruit, green apple and a vegetal whisper reminiscent of fennel. It is a wine for those who enjoy the tension, purity and energy of a Muscat that does not seek to please everyone, but rather to speak clearly of its origin and of those who grow it.
