Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Clos du Marquis is an attractive classic, offering up notes of cassis and licorice mingled with hints of mint, rose petal and pencil lead. Medium- to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's pure and lively, with sweet tannins and succulent acids to frame its fleshy, layered core of fruit.

Description
Clos du Marquis was not conceived as a mere second wine, but as a statement of identity within Saint Julien. Created in 1902, its name derives from the Petit Clos adjoining the Château Léoville Las Cases, the residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. But the decisive factor here is something else: the desire to produce a wine with a voice of its own from the great plots situated to the west of the Grand Enclos de Las Cases, surrounded by some of the Médoc’s most prestigious crus. Behind this approach lies a clear philosophy: to listen to the terroir, respect its uniqueness and allow each soil to express itself with precision. The vineyard is situated on ancient, finer-grained Quaternary gravels, with humic podzols over sandy-clay gravels – a perfect foundation for crafting a Bordeaux red wine with structure, distinction and enormous ageing potential. The blend, comprising Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, combines full-bodied richness, depth and classic vigour.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Clos du Marquis follows a rigorous and classic approach. The grapes are brought into the winery to be vinified by plot, preserving the identity of each terroir. Fermentation takes place in a combination of temperature-controlled wooden, concrete and stainless steel vats, allowing for measured and elegant extraction. The wine then undergoes a long ageing process in French oak barrels, where it gains complexity, texture and precision before bottling. The aim is to refine the wine without obscuring the character of Saint Julien.
Taste
In the glass, Clos du Marquis displays the serene poise of a great Saint Julien. Aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry emerge, enveloped in notes of cedar, graphite, fine tobacco and damp gravel. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet taut; the tannins are firm and elegant, the acidity underpins the whole, and the oak is perfectly integrated. The finish is long, fresh and mineral, with hints of black fruit, spices and stone that reinforce its aristocratic profile and its gastronomic appeal.
