Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
In bottle, the 2022 Lafite Rothschild has turned out even better than I anticipated. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, minty blackcurrants, violets and cigar box, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and suave, with a deep, enveloping core of lively fruit, beautifully refined tannins, and a long, perfumed finish. Even at this early stage, it's remarkably integrated and harmonious, and it's certainly the most elegant of the first growths this year, reminding me of a modern-day version of Lafite's magical 1953.

Description
Since time immemorial, the lands of Pauillac have been marked by the murmur of the Atlantic wind and the grave stillness of great wines. On top of a small hill of deep gravel - those "croupes" so beloved of the Médoc - Château Lafite Rothschild has been cultivating an idea for more than three centuries: that wine is not just a reflection of a vintage, but of a philosophy. It was in 1868, when the Rothschild family acquired the property, that this idea took on an even more precise, almost obsessive form: absolute respect for the vineyard, surgical precision in the cellar and an unshakeable faith in time as an ally.
An anecdote runs through the corridors of the château like a legend: in 1961, faced with the uncertain promise of a difficult vintage, the technical director refused to bring forward the harvest despite the threat of rain. His decision to wait resulted in a legendary vintage. Such counter-current decisions have defined the character of Château Lafite Rothschild. The wine is composed mostly of Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, small doses of Cabernet Franc and, occasionally, Petit Verdot, in proportions that vary each year like a fine-tuning of a classical score.
Winemaking
The winemaking process at Château Lafite Rothschild is meticulous: hand-selected cluster by cluster, double triage table and vinification by parcels. Each variety, each plot, each soil (from deep gravels to the freshest clays) is vinified separately in temperature-controlled wooden or stainless steel vats. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out naturally, with no added yeasts, and malolactic fermentation takes place in barrels.
The ageing is long, about 18 to 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels from the château's own cooperages. During this period, the wine is refined, polished and acquires the satiny texture so characteristic of Château Lafite Rothschild. It is bottled without filtration to preserve all its complexity.
Taste
Château Lafite Rothschild expresses itself with quiet elegance. At first, the nose is austere, almost restrained, but with aeration it unfurls notes of graphite, cedar, dried petals and blackcurrant. Nothing about it is immediate, everything is insinuation and depth. The palate is linear, precise, with very fine tannins that envelop the palate like taut velvet. The fruit is dark, ripe but not opulent: wild blackberry, black plum, with a saline background reminiscent of the stony Pauillac terroir. The finish is long, ethereal, like a lingering whisper.
