Can Sumoi Sumoll Garnatxa 2022
£13.78 (Inc. VAT bot. 75 cl.) / North Ireland
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The red 2022 Garnatxa - Sumoll was produced with a 50/50 blend of both grapes purchased from local growers. It has 12.7% alcohol, a pH of 3.39 and 5.4 grams of acidity. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, where it matured for nine months. It's primary, fruit-driven, aromatic, peachy, clean and expressive. The idea is to learn to make Sumoll and, in the long run, produce only Sumoll, not blend it with Garnacha. This has some dusty tannins and should stand up to food. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2023.

Description
Can Sumoi Sumoll Garnatxa is an authentic expression of the Montmell mountains. This wine is made from two native varieties: 50% Garnatxa and 50% Sumoll. These varieties complement each other perfectly, with the Sumoll bringing notes of wild fruits, rusticity, finesse and an electric acidity, while the Garnatxa provides nuances of red fruits, roundness, elegance and a silky texture.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, with the Garnatxa being harvested in mid-September on a fruit day and the Sumoll at the end of September on a flowering day. After the grapes are harvested, the wine is gently crushed and pressed in an inert atmosphere. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks at temperatures ranging between 22°C and 28°C, using indigenous yeasts from the vineyard. This process lasts 15 days, followed by pressing after fermentation. It also undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation. As for ageing, the wine is kept in stainless steel tanks for 9 months and then in the bottle for 3 months.
Taste
Can Sumoi Sumoll Garnatxa has an attractive garnet colour complemented by a ruby rim. On the nose, it displays a medium intensity, where one can perceive aromas of ripe red fruit, such as cherries and raspberries. These fruity notes are delicately intertwined with hints of blue flowers, bringing a floral character to the whole. In addition, a balsamic and mineral background can be detected, adding complexity to its aromatic profile. On the palate, it reveals itself as a dry wine, characterised by a good acidity that balances its flavour. The ripe, ripe fruit is present, offering a fresh and sweet taste. The tannins, although still in the process of being polished, give structure to the wine.
