Buy Wine from Château d'Yquem
Château d'Yquem is Bordeaux luxury wine: liquid gold nectar in its purest form! We move to the southwest part of Bordeaux and enter into the Gravas department, where red and white wines are produced on the northern part and sweet botrytized wines on the south one, under the designations of origin Sauternes, Barsac, Loupiac and Cérons. ¿Botrytized wines? Yes, my dear friends: splendid wines produced thanks to the action of a fungus which scientific name is Botrytis cinerea, commonly known as Noble Rot. The fungus produces a downy grey mould on the skin that removes water from the berries, thus leaving a higher percentage of sugars and, most important, fruit acids!
Yquem is the King of botrytized wines worldwide, without any doubt! In its early days, the estate belonged to kings and dukes, and was awarded the classification Premier Cru Supérieur in 1855. Much later, in 1996, 51% of the Yquem property was purchased by LVMH Group, and in 2004 Château Cheval Blanc got hold of the rest, appointing Pierre Lurton as wine production manager.
Château d'Yquem winery is a state with total 113 vineyard hectares where the prevailing varieties are Sémillon (80%) and Sauvignon Blanc (20%). Every year, three hectares are grubbed up in Yquem, in order to give the soil a rest, an agricultural practice called fallow. Here soils are made up of pebbles and gravel, that retain warmth, yet some parts have clay prevalence. Harvesting is performed in various stages, a procedure known as “tris” so the grapes are collected at their exact ripening point. Fermentation takes place later in French oak barrels and the wine will subsequently age for three and a half years in a cask. It should be mentioned that not every year wine is produced, only in exceptional years.
Their production is just 65.000 bottles of two different wines: Château d'Yquem is a delicious wine with mineral, peach, honey, nuts and fine woods flavours. In some vintages you will be able to find the unmistakable scent of white flowers and lavender. In mouth, its surprising acidity gives structure to the wine so its grandeur can be appreciated and drunk! On the other hand, Y d'Yquem is the young member of the family. A blend produced with equal parts of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, the wine is fermented in new French oak barrels. The difference with his elder brother is that grapes are totally damaged by Noble Rot, yet the wine is sweet.
Château d'Yquem: only excellent vintages!
