Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The nose of the 2017 Viña Gravonia Blanco is unmistakably López de Heredia, with those mushroom, white pepper and pollen aromas that remind you so much of the smell in their ancient caves. 2017 was the year of the big frost in April and the scarcity of rain that made it the earliest, scarcest and quickest harvest they have experienced in their recent history. The grapes for this wine were the first grapes picked, the 14th of September, from vines aged 93 years. It fermented in even older oak vats with indigenous yeasts ('We have never added yeasts to our wines,' they answer when asked) and matured in used American oak barrels for four years (possibly more looking at the bottling date). Of course, this could qualify as a Gran Reserva, but they keep it at Crianza (to have a range), and it's sold at a bargain price for its quality and age. It's characterful and nuanced, with some hints of development (diesel) and a lightish palate with pungent flavors and great harmony. It has the usual parameters; 12.5% alcohol, a pH of three and seven grams of acidity. 20,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2023.

Description
Viña Gravonia is a white wine made from 100% Viura grapes. This wine was created by the Bodega López de Heredia Viña Tondonia in the D.O.Ca. La Rioja.
The grapes with which this wine is produced come from the Viña Gravonia vineyard, which has 24 hectares, and was planted 45 years ago.
The vineyard is located on diverse soils ranging from alluvial to clay-limestone, with the presence of gravel and boulders and a microclimate with an Atlantic influence.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, bunch by bunch, and transported to the winery in comportas, poplar wood containers shaped like cone-shaped trunks. Once in the winery, the grapes are crushed by a steamroller to release the must.
The must ferments in large 60-hectolitre oak vats.
The ageing process lasts 4 years in oak barrels, with 2 rackings per year. The wine is then clarified with fresh egg whites and bottled unfiltered.
Taste
In the mouth it is fruity, complex, evolved, very fine, fresh and with a tremendously long finish.
A wonderful and unique white wine from La Rioja
Viña Gravonia owes its name to some vineyards that the López de Heredia winery owns some 200 metres away, acquired by the great-grandfather of the current managers of this Rioja winery. This magnificent white wine presents a style that shows the fresh and mineral character of this Rioja vineyard.
In the gastronomic field it is the perfect accompaniment to dishes such as: cooked, fried or grilled fish, seasoned fish, grilled seafood, white meats with consistent sauces and pasta.
