Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 2019
£17.88 (Inc. VAT & Duties bot. 75 cl.) / United Kingdom
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking style and philosophy. Sourced from premium vineyards across South Australia, this wine is known for its full-flavoured style with excellent Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, a firm but well-rounded structure and balanced oak. Made as a traditional 'Aussie' blend, the Shiraz component provides a fleshy fruit flavour while the Cabernet Sauvignon provides a framework of finely grained tannins.
The 1976 Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet when first released created an expectation for the future far beyond its modest price point. Initially offered to customers at $1.69 per bottle, today this wine can fetch over $250 at auction, illustrating the strength of its reputation among collectors and wine drinkers.
Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz offers generous sweet and savoury aromas on the nose. Each variety brings something intriguing to the blend. Baking spices abound, perfumed with raspberry coulis, dark cherry pie and powdered sugar. A hint of bergamot provides an Earl Grey charm. There is a certain opulence on the nose which is enriched by the presence of exotic spices. On the palate the oak-derived spice comes through with Hungarian pepper and celery salt. There are layers of flavour, hazelnut chocolate sweetness balanced by sautéed bacon, sandalwood and salty nori. A fine line of acid and talc tannins provide a smooth, luxurious mouthfeel.
