Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The nose and profile of the 2022 Finca Meixemán is a little darker than those from Capeliños and Pombeiras. It also has slightly higher ripeness and alcohol (13.5%) and feels a little earthy, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins that called for food. 2022 was not as warm and dry here as in other regions in Spain. It fermented with 55% full clusters and matured in used 225- and 500-liter barrels for one year. Production fluctuates between 6,000 and 8,000 bottles. It was bottled in July 2024.

Features

Description

In the steepest part of the Ribeira Sacra, where the vines seem to cling to the slopes as if their life depended on it, Pedro Rodríguez honours a family heritage as tough as it is beautiful. Guímaro Finca Meixemán is the original plot of Guímaro - "rebel" in Galician-, cultivated by his family for generations. It was here, on granite and schist soils, that Pedro decided to go back to basics, when in the 1990s few believed in the potential of this region. He opted to bottle his own, to work with artisanal precision and to let the wine speak for the land.

Today, Guímaro Finca Meixemán comes from vines over 70 years old, planted on the southern slopes of Amandi, the appellation's most prestigious sub-zone. With a blend of 80% Mencía and 20% Brancellao, the wine reflects the Atlantic climate, the mineral rigour of the soil and a philosophy of minimal intervention. The aim here is not to tame the grape, but to reveal it.

Winemaking

Harvesting is manual and the grapes for Guímaro Finca Meixemán are trodden with the feet in open vats of used French oak. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and 50% whole bunches provides structure and nerve. The wine is then aged for over a year in used 225 and 500 litre barrels. There is no filtering or fining, just a light dose of sulphur before bottling. The result is a raw and precise expression of the terroir, true to the spirit of Guímaro Finca Meixemán.

Taste

Guímaro Finca Meixemán shows a subtle nose, with sour cherry, raspberry and a background of wet stone, laurel and graphite. Herbal and balsamic touches appear, almost menthol. The palate is direct, with firm acidity and sculpted tannins, supporting flavours of pomegranate, rhubarb and a citrus echo. It is taut and vertical, lingering with a fine salinity and a hint of warm soil. It does not seek immediate impact, but depth and persistence. A pure Ribeira Sacra, with an Atlantic character and a mineral soul.
