Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

In terms of production numbers, this is one of the smallest vintages we've seen from the Costa Russi vineyard. Thanks to replanting efforts, about half of the old vines were ripped out in 2017 (compared to the 2016 vintage that made 10,000 bottles with the whole vineyard in production). The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco Costa Russi offers a warmer and softer character compared to Sorì San Lorenzo and Sorì Tildìn. Overall, the wine is richer and more textured. I definitely taste the vintage heat with its slightly sweeter and more accessible tones of cherry, cassis and fragrant blue flower. Costa Russi is usually defined by lifted notes of aniseed and sambuco, and you get those here too, although they are a less pronounced in this vintage. This is a balanced and carefully assembled Barbaresco with a lean approach backed by fine tannins and bright acidity.

Features

Description

Gaja Costa Russi wine is in the prestigious wine region of Barbaresco, Italy.
The Costa Russi vineyard is located in the municipality of Barbaresco, at the foot of a hill where, a little further up, Sorì Tildin is located. The land, facing south-west, is composed of clay-limestone loams and covers an area of 4.35 hectares, with an average altitude of 230 metres above sea level. The vines have an average age of 65 years.

Elaboration

Fermentation and maceration take approximately three weeks, followed by ageing in oak for 24 months, of which 12 months in French oak barrels and 12 months in wooden vats. The wine is composed entirely of Nebbiolo grapes, with an alcohol content of 14.00%. It is recommended to be enjoyed with grilled red meats, pizzas, pastas, stews and strong, mature cheeses.

Taste

Costa Russi is characterised by a generous, floral and sweet aroma, with intense notes of rose and violet, blood orange, red berries, liquorice and turmeric. On the palate, it is fleshy and loaded with notes of blackberry, red currant and black cherry. Soft, round tannins balance the good acidity, making it the most inviting and generous of Gaja's three single vineyards.
