Description

A strange breeze was blowing through the Arbois valleys when the idea of L'Octavin Reine de la Nuit was born. It was during a full moon night when Alice Bouvot, founder of the L'Octavin winery, decided to let her Chardonnay speak through time, without intervention, without masks. A radical decision: to macerate de-stemmed grapes for eight months, no press, no sulphur, no corrections. Just the grapes, the soil and the silence.

The grapes come from "La Mailloche", a five-hectare plot with 50-year-old vines on grey and white marl soils, which deliver a sharp minerality. The cultivation is organic and biodynamic, like Alice's whole philosophy: to take care of the vineyard as a living organism, to accompany without imposing. The Jura region, with its cool climate, balanced rainfall and a tradition that embraces natural winemaking, offers here a pure expression of Chardonnay with no frills, no veil, no oak. A wine that does not seek to please everyone, but to be true to its origin.

Winemaking

L'Octavin Reine de la Nuit is harvested by hand, selecting the bunches by hand. The grapes are completely destemmed and left to macerate with the skins for eight months insteel tanks. Fermentation is spontaneous, with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control. The wine is not filtered or clarified, no sugar, sulphites or additives are added. L'Octavin Reine de la Nuit is a natural, free-run wine, without make-up, bottled when it is ready, according to nature's rhythm.

Taste

In the glass, L'Octavin Reine de la Nuit displays a raw, lively, remarkably tense profile. Aromas of citrus fruits (lime, yellow grapefruit), green quince, herbal notes and an earthy background, almost like fresh rennet or natural yoghurt, create a challenging and suggestive nose. On the palate, the attack is direct, with sharp acidity and a very fine tannin texture, thanks to the long maceration. Citrus fruits return, with a marked salinity, almost like crushed stone, which runs through the palate with determination. There are also hints of dried apricot, apple skin and a slight bitter finish that lengthens the persistence.

This is not a wine for everyone: there is no fruity exuberance or enveloping oak. Here there is precision, elegant rusticity, and a wild authenticity. L'Octavin Reine de la Nuit is an ode to the land and to risk, a natural Chardonnay from the Jura that is drunk with respect and care.
