Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Carruades de Lafite is mostly composed of the younger replacement vines dotted throughout Lafite's vineyards on the plateau, which are harvested separately. Offering up aromas of red berries, cassis, cedar box and orange rind, it's medium to full-bodied, lively and layered, with good concentration and a long, penetrating finish. It's a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, part of which was matured in wooden vats rather than barriques.

Features

Description

In the heart of the Médoc, where the Atlantic winds caress the centuries-old vineyards of Château Lafite Rothschild, Carruades de Lafite, the second wine from this legendary estate, is born. Far from being a minor release, it is an authentic expression of the Pauillac terroir. At the end of the 20th century, Baron Éric de Rothschild had the idea of creating a wine that would faithfully express the character of the vineyard, but with greater accessibility. Thus Carruades was born, with its own style, but with the same rigour in its production.

The varieties that make up his blend - CabernetSauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and, occasionally, Petit Verdot -come from selected plots within the Lafite vineyard. The deep gravelly soils with clay provide a precise structure, while the proximity to the Gironde estuary guarantees freshness even in warm vintages. In a particularly difficult vintage, the team decided to reduce the production of Carruades de Lafite to maintain its integrity, a sign of the commitment to quality that defines this label.

Winemaking

Carruades de La fite is harvested by hand with careful selection in the field and in the cellar. Each parcel is fermented separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing the identity of each component to be preserved. Indigenous yeasts are used, and the extraction is delicate, focused on obtaining silky tannins and a refined aromatic expression.

After malolactic fermentation, Carruades de Lafite spends 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which approximately one third are new. It is neither fined nor excessively filtered, thus preserving its texture and complexity.

Taste

Carruades de Lafite offers a restrained but profound nose. Notes of graphite, cedar and damp earth appear, followed by elegant black fruit: cassis, wild blackberry, and nuances of blond tobacco and black tea. The oak is perceived as a subtle framework, without dominating.

On the palate, Carruades de Lafite shows precise structure, fine tannins and refreshing acidity. The Cabernet marks its straight and sober axis, while the Merlot brings an enveloping softness. The finish is long, with a saline and mineral touch that prolongs its elegance.

Carruades de Lafite does not try to imitate the Grand Vin: it is an accessible but faithful interpretation of the spirit of Lafite. A wine with its own voice, refined and discreet, ideal for those seeking authenticity and nobility without ostentation.
