Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Based on the 2016 vintage and deriving from vines in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, Egly's debut release of the NV Brut Les Prémices, a tank-fermented Champagne that displaces the Vignes de Vrigny as the house's entry-level bottling, was disgorged in July 2020 with two grams per liter dosage. Offering up aromas of peaches, orange rind and orchard fruit, it's full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with ripe acids and an enveloping, generous core of fruit. It's a blend of equal parts of the three grape varieties, and fully 30,000 bottles were produced.

Features

Description

Egly-Ouriet Les Prémices Brut is an exceptional champagne that represents the excellence of viticulture in the Champagne region of France. This wine is the result of a balanced blend of three classic grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier, grown in vineyards over 40 years old in the village of Trigny, adjacent to Merfy, on a plot of 3.5 hectares, which underlines its exclusivity and quality.

Winemaking

The production of this champagne is a meticulous and natural process. Fermentation occurs spontaneously without the addition of yeasts, using only indigenous yeasts. This approach highlights the purity and authentic expression of the terroir. Egly-Ouriet Les Prémices Brut matures for at least 36 months on its own yeasts, which contributes to its complexity and ageing potential. The final dosage is only 1 g/l, reflecting a low-intervention approach and highlighting the wine's intrinsic quality.

Taste

Egly-Ouriet Les Prémices Brut is a symphony of contrasts and complexities. The nose is intriguing, offering ripe aromas of beeswax and dried mango, along with fresh notes of lemon and quince. This duality of ripeness and freshness is what makes this champagne so captivating. On the palate, its true Egly-Ouriet character is revealed: impressive elegance and freshness, balanced with serene maturity. Flavours of sliced apple, blanched almonds and a hint of smokiness intertwine with ripe stone fruits, a light salinity and a chalky minerality. The wine also presents a dark dimension with notes of white tea and light tobacco, adding to its mystery and appeal.
This champagne is a true testament to the skill and dedication of Egly-Ouriet, a producer who has earned legendary status in Champagne. His Les Prémices Brut is not just a wine, but an experience that reveals new layers and nuances with every sip.
