Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From Dechant and Käferberg, fermented with 50% whole clusters and 50% whole berries for two and a half weeks, aged in 300-liter barrels for 16-18 months and two months in stainless steel, the deep ruby-colored 2018 Pinot Noir offers a clear, fresh, pure and spicy bouquet with toasty oak and fleshy cherry notes intertwined with deep, elegant fruit intermingled with porcini and forest floor aromas. Lush and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight, fresh and well-concentrated but juicy Pinot Noir with intensity, power and ripe and juicy fruit but no hints of over-ripeness. This is an excellent Pinot Noir still on its way. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022.

Features

Description

The red wine Bründlmayer Pinot Noir, also known as Blauburgunder, is an authentic expression of the Niederösterreich wine region of Austria. This wine is made from the ripest Pinot Noir grapes, especially from the renowned Dechant and Käferberg vineyards.
The Dechant vineyard consists of well-protected, south-east facing limestone loess terraces. On the higher terraces, there are clay and gravel deposits on ancient rock. On the other hand, the neighbouring Käferberg is located at the top of a southeast slope in Langenlois, with calcareous and clayey deposits on sand or gravel on a crystalline bed of gneiss, mica schist or amphibolite.

Elaboration

The traditional winemaking process for this wine includes a maceration of one and a half weeks, followed by 18 months of ageing in 300-litre Austrian and French oak barrels of 2 to 3 years old.

Taste

Bründlmayer Pinot Noir opens with a smoky and spicy touch, followed by berries, plums and cherries, as well as floral tones. On the palate, it is pleasantly dry and fresh, with hints of red fruits. This wine reveals a solid structure based on its well-integrated acidity and youthful grip, with a touch of oak on the long, spicy finish.
