Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From the north-facing lieu-dit Chavannes, the 2017 Côte de Brouilly unwinds to reveal scents of black raspberries, dried flowers, licorice and chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with good concentration and an unusually prominent chassis of structuring tannin this year that Foillard attributes to the impact of hail. This will merit a year or two of bottle age.

Features

Description

Alex Foillard Côte de Brouilly is an exceptional wine that reflects the expertise and dedication of its creator. Sourced from a 1 hectare plot in the La Folie - Odenas region, this wine is made from 100% Gamay grapes, grown on schist, granite and light sandy soils. The vines, between 30 and 60 years old, are worked according to organic principles, although they are not certified as such.

Winemaking

Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, where the wine remains for 21 days. During the first three days, the wine is pumped over daily. Subsequently, the wine is aged in the same concrete tanks for five months before being bottled without fining or filtering. Finally, the wine is refined in the bottle for six months before being marketed.

Taste

Alex Foillard Côte de Brouilly is a wine that stands out for its richness and complexity. On the nose, intense aromas of fresh red fruits and cherries, complemented by spicy and floral notes that add an extra dimension to its aromatic palette. On the palate, this wine reveals perfectly balanced acidity that fuses with immeasurable freshness, creating an exceptional taste experience. Flavours of red fruits and liquorice notes, along with a delicate vegetal touch, make this wine a true marvel of the Beaujolais region. Its lightness and fruitiness make it ideal to accompany a wide range of dishes, from aperitifs to red and white meats, poultry, mushrooms, barbecues, international cuisine and cheeses.
