Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Doad Lousas is the second vintage of the village red. It comes from gneiss and schist soils from the traditional zone of the Sil and is warmer and riper, a textbook example of ripe Mencía fruit, an earlier zone with juicy wines. As with the rest of the 2022s, I tasted the wine after it had been blended and the sulfur adjusted, waiting in stainless steel to be bottled in a couple of months. It has the textbook floral and perfumed nose, quite fruit-driven, juicy and tasty, with some fine tannins that need a bit of time in bottle to get polished. They expect to fill some 3,300 bottles from a number of barrels of different sizes.

Features

Description

Envínate Lousas Doad wine is a unique expression of Galician viticulture from the Galicia region of Spain. This wine stands out for its complex blend of varieties, led by Mencía which makes up 90% of the blend. The rest is a combination of Merenzao, Brancellao, Caiño Tinto, Garnacha Tintorera, Palomino and other varieties, adding up to 10%. This diversity of grapes brings an unequalled richness and complexity to the wine.
The production of Lousas Doad is a reflection of the dedication and respect for nature that characterises Envínate. The grapes are harvested from different terroirs in the village of Doade, where the soils vary from schist in the lower altitude sections to areas influenced by gneiss and sections with bright blue quartz and clay. The Atlantic climate of the region significantly influences the character of the wine.

Winemaking

In terms of viticulture, organic farming is practised, with vines at least 70 years old trained in double cordon. Vinification is carried out with whole bunches, fermented with wild yeasts in open stainless steel tanks, with a maceration of 25 to 30 days, depending on the plot, and a gentle daily pigéage. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures on its fine lees for 12 months in 500, 350 and 228 litre old oak barrels, without racking. It is bottled without filtering or stabilisation and with only 3g/HL of sulphur added at bottling.

Taste

Envínate Lousas Doad is characterised by bright aromas of fresh raspberries, strawberries, red cherries and red plums. In addition, more savoury elements are interwoven with hints of garrigue and wild thyme, culminating in a graphite-infused finish. These tasting notes reflect the complexity and elegance of this wine, which is suitable for both vegans and vegetarians.
