Description

At the foot of the picturesque Niedermorschwihr, on the steep slopes of the Grand Cru Sommerberg, Domaine Zind Humbrecht cultivates a small Riesling vineyard in the Dudenstein sub-area. With slopes of up to 45°, this terroir demands cultivation with a winch and a commitment that few dare to make. Olivier Humbrecht, biodynamic pioneer and the first French Master of Wine, opted for these difficult plots not for yield, but for authenticity. His philosophy: to let the wine express the energy of the soil and the year without filters.

Winemaking

The deeply decomposed granitic soil allows the roots to anchor vigorously and provides a sharp minerality. Sommerberg, "the hill of summer", enjoys an ideal southern exposure, although it cools down earlier than other Grand Crus such as Brand, as it is in the shade of the Vosges. Fermentation, spontaneous and long, takes a full year in large vats, followed by 12 months of ageing on the lees. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation, unusual for Riesling, which gives it depth and texture.

Taste

Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru is a taut, vibrant Riesling, displaying a precise nose: ripe citrus, lime zest, white flowers, wet granite and a subtle smoky echo. On the palate, the wine is dry, sharp, with firm acidity that sculpts the palate. Even so, a creamy texture - the fruit of lees and malolactic fermentation - balances its edge, providing an almost tactile volume. The finish is long, saline, with notes of green tea, mild spices and a penetrating minerality that is a signature of its origin. A pure, mountain Riesling that does not seek to please, but to excite.
