Buy Wine from Descendientes de J. Palacios
Álvaro Palacios, one of the most renowned Spanish winemakers, and Ricardo Pérez Palacios, his nephew, come from a family with a great winemaking tradition in La Rioja Baja.
Both Álvaro and Ricardo founded the Descendientes de José Palacios winery in Bierzo, in the Castilla y León region of Spain. This is a new winery that has its roots in the Palacios Remondo dynasty in La Rioja.
History of Descendientes de J. Palacios Winery
In 1999 Álvaro Palacios and Ricardo Pérez Palacios, decided to explore and find vineyards of difficult access, in high and low yielding areas in the Bierzo region.
From that moment they started buying old vineyards that nobody else was interested in, forming in a short time an excellent vineyard in the surroundings of the mountain village of Corullón.
In the same year Ricardo dared to apply biodynamic farming methods in his vineyards.
In 1999, he started in an old, stone-built bodega in Villafranca del Bierzo, which was completely restored. Today the bodega is located on a hilltop nestled in the mountains designed by the architect Rafael Moneo.
Varieties
At the Descendientes de José Palacios winery, the Mencía grape has a decisive role as the base grape for winemaking. This is a rare variety that is mainly planted in Bierzo and Galicia.
This type of grape produces small bunches with small, rough-skinned grapes. It is a superb variety for ageing and has good ageing potential.
Use of biodynamic techniques
Biodynamic techniques are used in the vineyards, in a process where the peculiarities of the climate, the soil, the plant and the winemaking process are essential for the wine.
These factors are reflected in the liveliness, fragrance and freshness of the wines, which faithfully represent the wine-growing personality of the Bierzo hills.
Vineyards
Corullón is an area of hills, ancient slate slopes, land of monks and pilgrims and of the Mencía grape.
In this attractive village of Corullón, Álvaro Palacios and his nephew cultivate 30 hectares of very old vines. It is a group of tiny vines on very steep soils. There, they follow the discipline of biodynamics in search of definition and purity.
These vineyards are spread over more than 200 plots with very different exposures and on different altitude scales, due to the orography composed of steep slopes.
In Corullón, the altitude of the vineyards varies between 500 and 950 m above sea level. The climate is continental, but with strong Atlantic influences, in one of the highest areas within the D.O. Bierzo, with soils of slate rocks with a thick laminar structure.
Wines
The Descendientes de José Palacios winery produces original, personalised wines with character, called Pétalos, Corullón, Moncerbal, Las Lamas and La Faraona, among other wines.
The project was initiated in homage to Álvaro's father and Ricardo's grandfather, and is based on the burgundy philosophy, that is to say, wines based on one type of grape (Mencía).
These wines are among the best that can be tasted in Spain today: power and elegance in a bottle.
