Buy Wine from Bodegas Frontonio
Bodegas Frontonio is located in the region of Aragón, Spain, specifically in the region of Valdejalón, a lesser known wine-growing area, but with great potential, influenced by the Iberian System and the Moncayo Mountains. The winery owes its name to San Frontonio, the beheaded martyr who, according to legend, was found upriver with his head still standing, being the patron saint of the region. This symbol of "going against the current" represents well the innovative and challenging spirit of the winery.
In 2019, they moved the production of their high-end wines to Alpartir, attracted by the potential of old vines in the Sierra de Algairén. They currently manage 65 hectares of traditional dry-farmed goblet-trained vineyards, which will reach full organic certification in 2023. This evolution and expansion has led the winery to become one of the references in the recovery of Aragonese Garnacha.
The core of the winery is in a house with an underground cave more than 200 years old that has been restored to allow gravity-fed vinification. This cave, with its three levels, offers the perfect conditions of temperature and humidity for the ageing of the wines.
Vineyards
The vineyards of Bodegas Frontonio are distributed in small plots between 450 and 1,030 metres above sea level, on soils ranging from clay to bluish slate. They are mainly goblet-grown, organically and regeneratively. Valdejalón is known as a "forgotten triangle", and it is here that the winery has rescued old vineyards, some dating back to 1898.
One of the most emblematic vineyards is El Jardín de las Iguales, located in the Barrandijos Valley, in the Sierra de Algairén, where some of the oldest vines date back to between 1898 and 1908. This vineyard has been carefully recovered by the Frontonio team, after having almost disappeared due to neglect. In this area, surrounded by forests, Garnacha and Macabeo are grown in north-facing mountain plots, essential for preserving the acidity and achieving the freshness and elegance characteristic of the winery's wines.
The region's climate is continental with a Mediterranean influence, characterised by the Cierzo, a cold, dry wind that dominates the area, and rainfall of between 350 and 500 mm per year. The winery enjoys approximately 2,800 hours of sunshine per year, which favours the growth of high quality grapes. This combination of climatic factors and careful viticulture allows Bodegas Frontonio to produce wines of great character and longevity.
Philosophy
At Bodegas Frontonio, the working philosophy revolves around minimal intervention and absolute respect for nature and terroir. They believe in making wines that authentically reflect the place they come from, so all the grapes are harvested by hand, and intervention in the winery is kept to a minimum. Vinification is carried out using traditional techniques, such as treading the grapes with the feet to avoid breaking the pips and avoiding bitter notes, as well as working by gravity. In the winery, they use a combination of cement, oak foudres and barrels of different sizes for ageing.
The style of the wines has evolved towards fresher and lighter profiles, following the tradition of long vatting. According to Fernando Mora, fresh grapes better reflect their place of origin, so they harvest earlier to avoid standardisation of flavours. This results in vibrant wines, full of life and expression of terroir.
Frontonio 's focus on recovering old vineyards is central to their project. Vineyards that were on the verge of extinction have been revitalised with regenerative farming practices, such as precision pruning, the use of natural fertilisers and replanting vines to ensure that the vineyards continue to thrive. This work is hard work and requires a great deal of effort, but it is essential to preserve biodiversity and soil quality.
The Jardín de las Iguales, one of the winery's most ambitious projects, includes plots of Grenache and Macabeo vines planted in 1890. Under this brand, Frontonio markets a deep white and a fragrant and vibrant Garnacha, both wines in very limited editions and with record prices in the Aragón region.
Bodegas Frontonio is more than a winery; it is a project with soul, dedicated to the recovery of historic vineyards and the production of wines that express the unique character of their terroir. The team, led by Fernando Mora, has successfully managed to fuse traditional techniques with a modern and respectful approach to nature, creating wines that tell stories and will undoubtedly leave a mark on the Spanish wine scene.
They currently produce around 150,000 bottles a year, of which a part belongs to the Botijo Rojo range, which includes Garnacha Tintas and Blancas. They also have a range of limited production wines under the brand El Jardín de las Iguales, where some of the most prestigious and exclusive wines of the region are produced.
