Features

Description

On the western slopes of the Grand Cru Hengst, where the soil turns a deep red due to its richness in iron, Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg is born. This vineyard, christened the "red hill", sits on steep slopes and shallow soils of marl and limestone, which force the vines to fight for every drop of energy. It was Emile Zind who, in the 1950s, intuited the hidden potential of this late, shady hillside, challenging the conventions of Alsatian viticulture. Today, this site of slow ripening and minimal yields gives life to one of the region's most intense and expressive Pinot Gris.

Winemaking

The vinification of Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg respects the identity of the Alsatian terroir with almost surgical precision. The grapes, harvested late and with the potential for botrytis, are pressed for long cycles to extract their full character. The must ferments naturally, slowly, thanks to its high acidity, without intervention. The wine ages 18 months in French oak barrels over 40 years old, on lees, without filtration, gaining density, depth and purity.

Taste

Far from the typical neutrality of Pinot Gris, Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rotenberg bursts forth with a nose marked by quince, candied citrus, ginger and a mineral background reminiscent of hot stone. On the palate, the texture is dense but taut, with sharp acidity balancing the ripe fruit. Notes of dried apricot, stewed pear and a saline, almost chalky finish build a serious, elegant profile. Persistent, with a slight structuring bitterness, it is a wine that demands attention and rewards with authenticity. A pure terroir white, complex and deeply Alsatian.
