The Tentenublo Wines winery is located in Viñaspre, a small village belonging to the municipality of Lanciego, in the Rioja Alavesa region of Spain. This project was founded by Roberto Oliván, who represents a new generation of Rioja winegrowers committed to the revitalisation of old vines and the production of unique wines that respect the terroir.
The winery takes its name from the ancient pealing of bells used in the region to ward off hail clouds, symbolising the connection between tradition and nature that characterises its wines.Roberto Oliván began his career in viticulture working with his grandfather's family vineyards and gradually acquired new plots. He trained as an oenologist at the University of La Rioja and has worked in several wineries before focusing on his personal project. His innovative approach and respect for traditional viticulture have positioned him as one of the most interesting producers in the region.
Since its foundation, the winery has maintained a clear philosophy: to produce wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the terroir, using natural winemaking techniques and minimising intervention. The result is a range of wines with a strong local identity and a strong international projection.
Vineyards
The Tentenublo Wines vineyards extend over 10 hectares, spread over more than 30 plots located in the village of Viñaspre, at an average altitude of 620 metres. This mountainous enclave is located at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria mountain range, which provides a perfect environment for quality viticulture.
The soil of the region is mostly limestone marl and reddish sandstone, a combination that gives the wines a unique minerality and a well-defined structure. These geological characteristics, combined with the continental climate moderated by the Atlantic influence, create the ideal conditions for growing the typical Rioja grape varieties, such as Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura.
The climate in this area is dry, with a marked difference between day and night temperatures, which favours a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes, preserving their natural acidity and developing complex aromatic profiles. The altitude and exposure of the vineyards also protect the vines from late frosts and excessive heat, guaranteeing the quality of the production year after year.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Tentenublo Wines focuses on making wines that respect the character of the terroir and the region's native varieties as much as possible. Roberto Oliván and his team work each plot individually, vinifying each one separately to preserve the identity of each vineyard. In addition, they use indigenous yeasts in fermentation, avoiding the use of chemical products that could alter the character of the wine.
One of the pillars of their project is the production of what they call "village wines", wines that capture the essence of the small villages of La Rioja and that are deeply linked to the land and local traditions. This artisanal and environmentally friendly approach has enabled the winery to develop unique, limited-production wines that have gained recognition both nationally and internationally.
During vinification, Tentenublo wines are aged in French oak barrels for 9 to 12 months, depending on the type of wine. Oliván prefers to use second or third use barrels so as not to overload the wine with wood notes, allowing the fruit and mineral aromas to express themselves more clearly. Some of his most outstanding wines, such as Escondite del Ardacho, come from very old vines, some up to 105 years old, which adds extra complexity to the profile of his wines.
Roberto has also opted for a sustainable viticulture model, certifying the winery as organic and prioritising practices that minimise environmental impact. In his vineyards, he avoids the use of pesticides and herbicides, promoting biodiversity and ensuring the long-term health of the soil.
Tentenublo Wines represents an exceptional example of how traditional viticulture and innovation can coexist to produce high quality wines that reflect the unique character of their place of origin. Through respect for the terroir, natural winemaking techniques and a clear personal vision, Roberto Oliván has managed to position his winery as a benchmark within the new generation of Rioja producers.
His focus on the individuality of each plot and his commitment to sustainability ensure that Tentenublo wines are not only a pleasure for the palate, but also an authentic reflection of the cultural and natural heritage of La Rioja Alavesa.
