Description
Among the steep hills of Katzenthal in Alsace, where the granite crumbles to dust underfoot and the Château du Wineck casts its medieval shadow over the vineyards, Zind Humbrecht found a new jewel for its heritage in 2021: a hectare of old Riesling vines in the Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg. Brought by Jérôme Noll, viticulturist and current vineyard manager, these vines embody the will to work extreme plots, difficult to access, where the vines are pushed to their limits. Here, on granitic biotite soils and in a microclimate with marked temperature fluctuations, the Riesling achieves a raw, vertical and mineral expression.
The vineyard is located between 280 and 390 metres above sea level, protected from the wind by hills and fully exposed to the sun. The steep slope and the poor soil force the plant to take deep roots, producing an inimitable complexity.
Winemaking
The grapes that give life to the Zind Humbrecht Riesling Wineck Schlossberg Grand Cru, harvested by hand, are gently pressed for several hours to preserve their purity. Spontaneous, slow fermentation takes place in large, traditional vats, without temperature control or additives. The wine rests on its fine lees for several months, without severe filtration, capturing the pure energy of the Wineck-Schlossberg terroir.
Taste
Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Wineck Schlossberg Grand Cru is austere but crisp on the nose: lime zest, white flower, a trace of quince and sharp minerality. On the palate, it displays electric tension, with vibrant acidity that cuts across the palate like a granite blade. Pink grapefruit, subtle salinity, and a dry, stony background that prolongs its imprint. This is a mountain Riesling, unadorned, with a restrained energy that invites contemplation. A sincere and uncompromising expression of the great Wineck-Schlossberg.
