Bodegas Juan Gil is located in Jumilla, an appellation of origin located in the region of Murcia, in southeastern Spain.
This bodega has more than a century of history, having been founded in 1916 by Juan Gil Jiménez, great-grandfather of the current owners. Juan Gil, originally a stonemason, decided to venture into the world of wine, a trade that has been inherited by four generations of the Gil family. Over the years, the bodega has evolved from a small producer to one of the most important in the region.The current winemaker is Miguel Gil, a member of the fourth generation of the family. Under his leadership, the bodega has grown in quality and recognition, not only in Jumilla but also in other wine regions of Spain. Miguel has collaborated with renowned winemakers, such as Chris Ringland, who has contributed his experience from Australia in the creation of wines such as Clío and El Nido, which have become consolidated as quality references.
Vineyards
Bodegas Juan Gil owns more than 350 hectares of vineyards, although the family group to which the winery belongs, Gil Family Estates, controls more than 1,400 hectares in different regions of Spain. The main vineyard is located in the Paraje de la Aragona, near Jumilla. The vineyards are mainly planted with the native Monastrell variety, although other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Garnacha Tintorera are also grown.
The terroir of Jumilla is unique, with stony, limestone soils and an extremely dry, hot climate. The Monastrell vines, especially, are dry-farmed, which means that no irrigation is used, relying solely on the scarce natural rainfall. This generates low yields, but highly concentrated grapes that result in robust and expressive wines. In addition, the winery has adopted organic farming practices, with more than 870 hectares certified organic since 2022, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment.
