Buy Wine from Clemens Busch
The Clemens Busch winery is located in the Mosel region of Germany, specifically in the picturesque village of Pünderich on the banks of the Moselle River. This winery has a rich history dating back to 1663, when the main building of the winery was built, situated directly on the banks of the river overlooking the Marienburg vineyards. Clemens Busch is the fifth generation of winemakers on this estate, and all the previous ones also bore the name Clemens.
In 1975, Clemens started working on his father's 2-hectare estate, and has since expanded his land to 18 hectares, almost all of it on the slopes of Marienburg. Clemens and his wife Rita pioneered organic viticulture in Germany, adopting organic practices in 1984 and biodynamic in 2005. The winery is a member of the Verein Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP), an association of quality wineries in Germany.Vineyards
The Clemens Busch vineyards are located in different sections of the Pündericher Marienburg, which has a variety of exposures, altitudes and soil colours. This region is unique for its geology based on ancient volcanic formations and has three main types of slate: blue, red and grey. These slates dominate different plots along the slopes opposite the village. Some of the most reputable plots within Marienburg include ROTHENPFAD, FAHRLAY and FELSTERRASSE. ROTHENPFAD is known for its red slate which gives herbaceous and spicy notes to the wines. FAHRLAY, on the other hand, is located on a south facing slope with terraces of very hard blue slate, producing Rieslings with a deep salty minerality. FELSTERRASSE, with its terraces between rocky outcrops and grey slate soil, produces harmonious and elegant wines.
Philosophy
Clemens Busch's philosophy focuses on producing authentic and expressive wines that represent their particular origin. The winery has fully embraced organic and biodynamic viticulture, seeking to work in harmony with nature and terroir. Most of the estate's wines are dry vinified, and are rich, complex and often powerful. They are aged in traditional Fuder-Fass (1000 litre barrels) using only indigenous yeasts. This fermentation in wooden barrels provides the yeasts with the oxygenation necessary for even fermentation. In addition, the winery avoids the use of fining agents and some wines are aged for more than 10 months.
