Buy Wine from Constantina Sotelo
Constantina Sotelo is a small winemaker in the Rías Baixas, specifically in Cambados, one of the most emblematic areas for the production of Albariño. This winery is located in the village of Castrelo, in the heart of the Salnés Valley, known as the cradle of Albariño due to its long winemaking tradition.
The project was initiated in 1999 by Constantina Sotelo herself, who since her childhood showed a deep connection with viticulture, learning from her ancestors.Constantina's interest in wine was born at home, in an environment where winemaking was part of the family's daily life. This passion was consolidated over time, until she decided, with the support of her family, to launch her own winery project, always maintaining a strong link with tradition and respect for nature. Today, the winery is still a family business, with Constantina at the helm, combining the inherited teachings with a modern and innovative vision.
Vineyards
Constantina Sotelo 's vineyards are located in small plots distributed in the privileged natural environment of the Salnés Valley, just a few metres from the Arousa Estuary, which provides exceptional conditions for growing Albariño. These plots are located between 5 and 40 metres above sea level, and grow on soils formed by the decomposition of granite, typical of this region. In some areas, the vineyards sit on fluvial-marine sediments, which contributes to the freshness and acidity that characterise the winery's wines.
Climate is another key factor in the production of Constantina Sotelo wines. The Atlantic influence, with mild and humid summers, together with the proximity to the sea, favours a slow and uniform ripening of the grapes, which results in an excellent concentration of aromas and a very well-defined natural acidity. The work in the vineyards is carried out manually, avoiding at all times the use of products that could alter the natural expression of the terroir.
The total area of the vineyards is about 2.5 hectares, which allows the winery to focus on a limited and high quality production, taking care of every detail of the process from the vineyard to the bottle.
Philosophy
Constantina Sotelo 's philosophy is based on minimal intervention and absolute respect for the terroir. The main objective is for each wine to reflect in a pure and honest way the natural environment from which it comes. This respect for the land is embodied in the use of traditional winemaking techniques, combined with an innovative and experimental approach, which allows the creation of unique and singular wines.
In the winery, each vintage is treated in a special and singular way, always seeking to ensure that the wine itself marks the time of its production and ageing. To this end, different types of containers are used for fermentation and ageing, ranging from stainless steel tanks to clay amphorae, French oak barrels, chestnut barrels, oval terracotta tanks and concrete eggs. All this process is carried out under careful observation, allowing the Albariño to develop in an environment that favours the purest expression of the variety and the vineyard.
One of the key elements in the elaboration of their wines is the use of indigenous yeasts for alcoholic fermentation, which guarantees that each wine is a faithful representation of the microbiology of their vineyard. In addition, many of their wines undergo spontaneous malolactic fermentation, which helps to soften the acidity and add complexity to the wines.
The result of this philosophy is the creation of Albariños that stand out for their freshness, vibrant acidity and great ageing capacity. Each bottle is a reflection of the unique environment of the Salnés Valley and Constantina Sotelo's commitment to authenticity and honesty in winemaking.
In terms of winemaking techniques, Constantina Sotelo uses traditional methods combined with more avant-garde techniques. The grapes are harvested by hand, carefully selecting the bunches at the optimum moment of ripeness. The grapes are either directly pressed or manually destemmed, depending on the type of wine to be made.
Among their most outstanding wines, we can mention: Gazafello, an Albariño fermented in spherical porcelain stoneware amphorae, with indigenous yeasts; Maristerra, an Albariño fermented in terracotta amphorae, with spontaneous malolactic fermentation; Octopus Albariño, is fermented with maceration of skins in clay amphorae, standing out for its character and structure; Octopus Tinto, made with Caíño Tinto and Espadeiro grapes, with maceration and fermentation in clay amphorae; and Pelicas, an Albariño with maceration of skins during fermentation in clay amphorae.
