Buy Wine from Jean Maupertuis
Jean Maupertuis is the leading natural winegrower in the Auvergne region of France. Who would have thought that this computer scientist in the Rhône Valley, who spent every afternoon in the vineyards after work, would give up everything to devote himself to making wine. Reserved and modest, in the 1990s, he completed a training programme in viticulture and production in Mâcon.
Jean Maupertuis' vineyards
Maupertuis cultivates with great precision 3.8 hectares in the commune of Saint-Georges-sur-Allier and La Roche Noir. Most of his vines are old, between 40 and more than 100 years old. He had to start from scratch in a region that was not known for its wines at the time. He works with a local variety of Gamay called "Gamay D'Auvergne", but he also has some Pinot Noir and a small amount of Noirfleurien, an old local variety. These Gamay vines have been planted on white feldspar-rich sand in the Cru de Madargues for more than 30 years. Since founding his vineyard and winery, Maupertuis has continued to grow and deepen his ties with the vines.
Wines of Jean Maupertuis
Some of his natural wines are fragrant and light. Others are ancestral and wild, fruity and juicy. They work with a spontaneous carbonic maceration in cold for three weeks, with half of the grapes de-stemmed. Bottling is unclarified, unfiltered and without adding SO2. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, first in tank, and then the wine is transferred to old barrels.- ;
